Weekend tourists making the most of the Obon national holiday and Japan’s main hiking season caused a human traffic jam to form along Mount Fuji’s hiking trail on Sunday (August 12).
Twitter user Miki Kiura who visited the mountain on Sunday posted a photo showing the long, snaking queue of people making the climb. “There’s a crazy traffic jam, and we can’t move forward at all,” wrote Kiura.
Kiura had been hiking on the mountain’s Yoshida trail while at its seventh station. Despite the crowd, Kiura persevered.
The jam coincided with the start of Japan’s Obon holiday break from August 12 to 16. Hiking the slopes of Mount Fuji are restricted to the season from July 10 to September, when the safest weather conditions usually prevail.
