The Route 66 centenary in 2026 is expected to attract huge interest from road trippers keen to explore the legendary route that stretches across the heart of the US, from Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California.

According to the route’s website, Route 66 is seen as “an indelible symbol of American freedom and adventure that has shaped the history and culture of the United States”.

Hundreds of events are being organised to mark the route’s milestone year, including vintage car runs and caravan convoys.

Route 66, the website notes, recalls the golden age of road trips. “Quirky roadside stops, neon-lit diners, and classic mom-and-pop motels, making every mile a journey into America’s heartland charm.”

Route 66 will feature heavily in ‘America the Beautiful’, Brand USA’s new global tourism marketing campaign.
