Terrifying scenes have emerged of passengers escaping a sinking ferry boat taking passengers from Nusa Lembongan island to Sanur in Bali.

The boat, with 89 passengers onboard, mostly tourists, listed badly on the jetty and keeled over after being hit by a wave, local police said.

Video released on YouTube showed the moments last week when passengers realised that the boat was taking on water and were forced to scramble for exits.

Lauren Dague, an American passenger onboard, told Good Morning America, “It felt like five minutes for the entire boat to sink”. She broke through a window to escape.

A tourist from Australia said, “The one point of exit was, literally, a little hatch. People were panicking, particularly at the back of the boat where water was coming in.”

Images showed people jumping off the boat into the water, or scrambling onto small boats which came to the rescue. No injuries were reported.
