Europe's scorching summer is showing little sign of easing, with soaring temperatures and widespread wildfires affecting several popular holiday destinations.
While flights continue to operate in most places, travellers may need to prepare for disruptions, poor air quality and uncomfortable sightseeing as temperatures climb well above seasonal averages.
Spain and France remain among the hardest-hit countries.
Spain is battling major wildfires around Madrid, Ávila, Toledo, Valencia and Castellón, prompting a national emergency and the evacuation of around 75,000 residents and visitors. Temperatures are forecast to climb to between 38°C and 40°C, increasing the risk of further fires.
In France, wildfires have forced hundreds of thousands to evacuate, particularly in the south-western regions of Gironde and Landes. Authorities continue to warn of flare-ups as temperatures exceed 40°C in some areas.
The heatwave is also stretching across much of Europe. Recent temperatures of popular destinations:
Portugal: up to 43°C
Italy: above 40°C in several cities
Greece: around 40°C, with deadly wildfires already reported
Germany: up to 41.7°C
Hungary: around 42°C
Poland: around 40.5°C
Czech Republic: around 41.9°C
Austria: around 40°C
United Kingdom: up to 37.7°C
Switzerland: 34°C to 37°C in affected regions
For travellers, the heat could mean more than just a sweaty holiday. Long queues at attractions, walking tours, outdoor dining and even public transport may become less comfortable during the hottest parts of the day, while wildfire smoke could affect air quality in some destinations.
The European Union warns that wildfire risks could spread eastwards into Italy, Greece and parts of Central Europe as another spell of extreme heat takes hold.
