China has introduced visa-free entry for passport holders from nine additional countries, allowing for stays of up to 15 days for business, tourism, family visits, and transit. The policy, effective from 8 November 2024 to 31 December 2025, applies to citizens from Slovakia, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Andorra, Monaco, Liechtenstein, and South Korea.

This move is expected to increase inbound tourism and support sectors such as accommodation, catering, and transport. Chinese travel agencies have begun expanding their product offerings, preparing to meet the anticipated rise in demand from these markets. The inclusion of South Korea in the visa waiver list is particularly significant, as this marks the first time South Korea has been included in China's visa waiver list.

Industry responses indicate strong expectations for increased travel from South Korea. Hana Tour, Korea's largest travel agency, anticipates a surge in demand for tours to China, citing the reduced time and cost associated with obtaining visas. Prior to this policy, securing a visa for China could take around a week and cost at least 60,000 won (US$43.50).

According to recent data from the National Immigration Administration, the number of foreign nationals entering China rose by 48.8% year-on-year in Q3, with 4.885 million arrivals under existing visa-free arrangements, marking a 78.6% increase. The expanded visa-free policy is anticipated to further bolster these numbers, supporting China’s broader goal of increased cultural exchange and international tourism growth.
