The 58th edition of the MATTA Fair, held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) from 3-5 April 2026, hit a record 2,051 booths – the highest number of exhibitors in the Fair’s history.

“The scale reflects the state and health of the tourism industry that continues to show strength and resilience, even amid global uncertainties,” said Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) president, Nigel Wong.

“The past few years have tested the industry in many ways – from the pandemic to what we are seeing now in West Asia. It is a strong signal of the industry’s confidence. People still want to travel, and the industry continues to adapt and move forward.”

On the outbound front, ongoing tensions in West Asia have seen more travellers looking for options closer to home. “We’re seeing more interest in ASEAN destinations and domestic travel,” said Hussaini Khairudin of Arba Travel & Tours.

“People still want to travel, but they’re choosing places that make them feel safe and require shorter travel time.”

China remains a strong draw, especially for its visa-free entry policy.

“For families, the savings are significant without the need for visa applications,” said Andy Soon of Golden Destinations. “And with the currency still favourable, China is very attractive.”

Domestic tourism remains a key focus for Malaysians, driven by ongoing improvements in infrastructure that benefit both locals and international visitors, while also supporting more sustainable travel.

For instance, Johor, named the Fair’s favourite destination, has pumped RM143.84 million (US$35.7 million) into tourism development, “with a broader vision to attract 12 million visitors, especially from neighbouring Singapore and Indonesia,” said YB Mr. Raven Kumar Krishnasamy, Johor State Unity, Heritage and Culture Committee Chairman. He represented YAB Dato’ Onn Hafiz Ghazi, Menteri Besar Johor at the Fair’s officiating ceremony.

Singapore travellers showed similar priorities at the recently concluded NATAS Travel Fair in Singapore, which found that the ongoing war has yet to dampen outbound travel demand.
