Travel is booming in Southeast Asia as the year draws to a close, with Singaporeans leading the way. According to a study by Milieu Insight, 79% of Singaporeans have already embarked on international trips this year—the highest in the region. Across Southeast Asia, 66% of respondents reported taking between one and four leisure trips abroad.
Travel trends at a glance
Sightseeing and outdoor adventures remain the top motivators, with 64% of respondents choosing these activities. Shopping is next on the list at 44%, while 32% are drawn to art, history, and cultural immersion. Despite the thirst for exploration, Southeast Asians are budget-conscious, with 77% planning trips within a budget and 79% keen on affordable local experiences like workshops.
Preferences also vary by country. Malaysians and Vietnamese lean towards adventurous itineraries, while Singaporeans and Thais opt for slower-paced, relaxing holidays.
Popular destinations
Southeast Asia (49%) and East Asia (45%) top the charts as the most visited regions this year. The year-end season has many travellers ready, with one in three already booking tickets and accommodation for upcoming leisure trips.
Who are they travelling with?
Romantic partners and spouses are the most common travel companions, cited by 42% of respondents, followed by friends (30%), parents (27%), children (22%), and siblings (20%).
Rise of digital travel platforms
Convenience is key, with 71% using platforms like Klook and Skyscanner to plan and book trips. These tools are popular for their discounts and the ability to handle multiple bookings on one platform. However, barriers like concerns over scams and a preference for traditional methods remain for some.
