A new QR code payment mode will be offered for passengers travelling on Thailand’s diesel-powered trains operated by the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), the authority’s acting governor Voravuth Mala said.
Passengers will be able to make payments via QR code at 56 main train stations nationwide through 140 QR code-generating machines installed, Bangkok Post reported. These include Bangkok’s Lamphong station, Chiang Mai, Ubon Ratchathani, Nong Khai, Hat Yai (in Songkhla) and Chumphon.
The service, part of an agreement between the railway operator and Kasikorn Bank, will enable passengers to make payments by using Kasikorn Bank's mobile application to scan the codes.
SRT’s acting chief also said the railway operator may look into expanding the service to small stations in the future should the service prove popular with commuters.
Nearly 29 million passengers use SRT’s trains annually, but only 11 million are fare-paying passengers, while the remaining users being welfare card-folders.
