Forget cat cafés. Japan is about to open a temple-style museum where cats are the stars, despite there not being a single real feline in sight.

Located in Yufuin, near Lake Kinrin in Oita Prefecture and situated within walking distance of JR Yufuin Station and close to the popular Lake Kinrin, the attraction describes itself as the world's first temple-style museum dedicated entirely to cat-themed art.

The musuem will open on 12 August 2026, combining cat-themed art with traditional Japanese architecture and playful photo spots.

Despite its name, visitors will not find any furry residents. Instead, the venue is an art museum celebrating cats through paintings, sculptures and interactive displays.

Beyond the galleries, the museum has been designed with plenty of photo opportunities.

Traditional Japanese elements, including painted fusuma sliding doors, ceiling murals and shrine-inspired spaces, have all been given a feline twist.

Visitors will also spot playful takes on well-known artworks, including a cat version of Johannes Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring, alongside works by Japanese cat artist Kaya Miyano.

The new venue follows the success of the original NyanNyan-Ji in Kyoto, which has become a popular stop for domestic and international visitors looking for unusual attractions.
