Those pesky restrictions on taking liquids onboard aircraft are back in Europe.

From Sunday, 1 September, passengers who carry more than 100ml of liquid onboard aircraft in hand luggage will have the items confiscated at European airports.

The about-face to restore the 100ml limit came after concerns about the effectiveness of recently introduced advanced 3D scanners which allow passengers up to two litres of liquids in carry-ons - with no requirement to take liquids out from their hand luggage.

Now, the 100ml limit is coming back – and at most airports, liquids must be carried within a resealable clear plastic bag with a maximum volume of one litre. Liquids and gels over 100ml will need to be put into checked luggage.

“This precautionary measure is not in response to any new threat but addresses a temporary technical issue, undertaken in alignment with the EU’s international partners,” the European Commission said in a statement.
