SINGAPORE - Singapore
Airlines may be poised to ramp up its presence in India to counter Emirates and
Etihad, who have a strong presence in the country’s aviation sector.
Vistara,
Singapore Air’s Indian joint venture, is evaluating the acquisition of more 787 Dreamliner jets from Boeing to add
flights to international destinations, including the US, people familiar with
the matter told Bloomberg.
The
carrier is also eyeing the purchase of more A320neo-family planes from Airbus,
including the longest-range A321XLR model, they said.
Vistara, whose major shareholder is
Indian conglomerate Tata Group, flies only narrow-bodied planes but it has ordered its first
wide bodies - six Dreamliners that are due for delivery by next year.
As part of its expansion plans, Vistara is also
considering buying some of London Heathrow airport’s prized – and very
expensive - slots.
