The plane had to return to the gate after the pair refused to view a card detailing the flight's safety instructions.

Two passengers have been turfed off an Air New Zealand flight after reportedly refusing to pay attention to an airline safety briefing.

Stuff NZ reported the two, a man and a woman, were sitting in an exit-row on a plane at Wellington Airport bound for Auckland on Tuesday morning.

The plane had to return to the gate after the pair refused to view a card detailing the flight's safety instructions.

Despite repeated requests from a flight attendant to study the safety card, the woman looked at a book and then her phone.

"A flight attendant said very patiently 'Can you please watch what's happening because this is the exit row', a fellow passenger told Stuff.

"The flight attendant was super kind and kept asking her, but the woman put her fingers in her ears.

“When they were told that police were waiting for them, the woman pulled out her phone and loudly tried to make a booking with Jetstar, the witness said.

Another passenger on board the plane had some sympathy for the two passengers who were taken off the plane, claiming while Air New Zealand is famous for its humorous onboard safety videos, maybe this couple had seen them one time too many.

The woman is believed to have received an infringement notice under NZ’s Civil Aviation Authority rules relating to the use of a cellphone.
