Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) has placed an order for up to 60 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft as part of its fleet renewal strategy for Malaysia Airlines. The order consists of 18 Boeing 737-8 and 12 Boeing 737-10 jets, with options for an additional 30 aircraft.

The deal, finalised in January 2025 and previously listed as an unidentified order on Boeing's website, aims to improve fleet efficiency and support growing passenger demand in Southeast Asia. The 737-8 is valued for its versatility, while the 737-10, the largest in the 737 MAX family, offers increased seating capacity.

"This is a significant investment for Malaysia Aviation Group, enabling us to deliver cutting-edge premium cabin offerings and state-of-the-art technology to our customers," said Izham Ismail, group managing director of MAG. "The addition of these new airplanes will not only enhance our fleet's efficiency and increase seating capacity, but allow us to elevate the overall inflight experience, with our passengers' needs at the forefront."

Malaysia Airlines has operated Boeing 737 aircraft since 1969 and currently has more than 50 in its fleet. The airline’s latest order aligns with long-term growth forecasts for Southeast Asia, where passenger air traffic is expected to more than triple over the next two decades.

The new aircraft are designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions by 20%, supporting the airline’s sustainability goals while expanding its operational capacity.
