Malaysia Airlines has come under increasing pressure to impose a full in-flight alcohol ban, a move that the airline says aligns with cultural and religious values highlighted by lawmakers from the Perikatan Nasional coalition.

The push for the ban was led by conservative members of the PAS party, part of the ruling coalition. They have suggested replacing alcoholic beverages with local favourites such as sirap bandung and cendol.

In recent years, the Malaysia national carrier has faced growing pressure to follow the lead of airlines from Muslim-majority countries, including Saudia, Kuwait Airways, and Air Arabia, which prohibit alcohol on board. However, major Middle Eastern carriers such as Emirates and Qatar Airways continue to serve it, maintaining international standards for global travellers.

In the wake of the latest controversy, industry observers warn that Malaysia Airlines risks damaging its reputation as a premium, internationally minded carrier.

Travel industry members also expressed concern that the decision could hurt Malaysia’s global image as a moderate and inclusive travel destination.
