Vietnam’s Bamboo Airways has abruptly cancelled several international
routes and says it will be “charting a new course, pushing ahead with
restructuring”.
Among the “inefficient routes with low passenger demand” being
offloaded are Melbourne and Sydney in Australia, and Frankfurt and
London in Europe.
Instead, the airline says its focus will be on key domestic routes
linking Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, as well as short-haul
flights in Southeast Asia, using single-aisle jets.
In 2019, Bamboo Airways took delivery of two Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners
as it sought to stretch its reach into Australia and Europe, but these
aircraft types appear to have no future in the airline’s fleet.
In a statement, Bamboo Airways said its aim now is “to rebuild the airline more efficiently and streamlined”.
In Australia, Bamboo has sacked all its local staff.
