Venice is limiting tourist groups to 25 individuals, banning the use
of loudspeakers and preventing groups from halting in narrow streets or
on bridges, with effect from June 2024.
Elisabetta Pesce, the city's security councillor, emphasised these
actions as pivotal for managing groups effectively and ensuring the
city's safety.
Simone Venturini, the tourism councillor, highlighted these changes
as part of a broader strategy to balance the needs of residents and
visitors while enhancing tourism management in Venice.
These steps follow earlier initiatives, including the introduction of a trial visitor fee of €5 and concerns raised by UNESCO regarding Venice's vulnerability to over-tourism and climate change impacts.
The city's ongoing challenges with escalating tourist numbers have
raised fears about potential irreversible alterations to its historical
legacy and infrastructure.
Amidst these changes, monitoring accommodation availability for both
tourists and residents has become a pressing issue for local
associations, reflecting the city's struggle to maintain a delicate
balance between its cultural heritage and the demands of modern tourism.
