Less than a month after Timor-Leste stepped into the spotlight after debuting at the ASEAN Tourism Forum 2026, the young nation of slightly over one million citizens has announced more direct flights and upcoming major events to build momentum for its tourism scene.

Starting 28 March, local carrier Aero Dili will add twice-weekly flights from Dili to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. From 24 May, Aero Dili will commence twice-weekly services to Darwin, Australia.

These bring Timor-Leste’s international flight network to six destinations, complementing its existing services to Bali, Singapore, Xiamen, and Fuzhou. Key air hub, Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport (DIL) recently received a new terminal, cargo facilities, runway extension, and has set a goal to reach one million passengers by 2028.

Events drive visitor appeal

To keep visitors coming, Timor-Leste is continuing to tap on festival and sports tourism.

Tasifest – a music, culture, sustainability and innovation-themed festival returns this 29-30 May, following last year’s edition which welcomed more than 50,000 attendees. Headliners for the 2026 edition include Indonesian singer Iwan Fals, musical duo Calema from São Tomé and Príncipe, Angolan singer Rui Orlando, and winner of the first season of Australian Idol in 2003 Guy Sebastian.

The 10th edition of the Dili International Marathon, themed ‘Love Our Forests and Wildlife’ will follow a new coastal route along the Banda Sea, alongside a call for conversation efforts.

“By running for our forests and wildlife, we acknowledge that our natural heritage is as precious as our athletic potential. We invite the world to run with us, not just for personal achievement, but to help protect the unique ecosystems that make Timor-Leste extraordinary," said president José Ramos-Horta.

About over 6,000 participants, of which more than 500 will be international runners are expected to race a full marathon, half marathon, 10km route for para-athletes, and a 5km fun run for participants of all ages.

“These two major events and the increased international inbound flights will certainly help strengthen our attractiveness and reputation as an emerging tourism destination in Southeast Asia,” says Antonio da Silva, director general of tourism.
