Thailand is moving ahead with plans for a 12.17-billion-baht (US$366 million) cruise terminal in Koh Samui, a project expected to accommodate large cruise vessels and handle up to 400,000 passengers annually.
The development follows comments made in May by deputy transport minister Sanphet Bunyamanee, who noted he was pushing for the project’s approval. The terminal, to be built in Surat Thani province, is targeted to open in 2032.
Before construction can proceed, the project must undergo environmental and health impact assessments. The government also plans to invite private-sector participation through a 30-year concession, under which an operator would co-manage the terminal.
The proposal is currently under review by the Ministry of Transport and the transport minister. If approved, it will be submitted to Thailand's Cabinet, with a decision expected in 2027.
The deputy transport minister also indicated that Phuket and Pattaya are being considered for future cruise terminal developments.
