British band Coldplay has drawn inspiration from Singapore for their latest music video, "Man In The Moon" (2024). The video, filmed entirely in Singapore, features the band performing on a custom-made floating stage in Marina Bay, with the iconic city skyline, including landmarks such as Marina Bay Sands, Singapore Flyer, and Gardens by the Bay, serving as a stunning backdrop.
The video highlights the vibrancy and diversity of Singapore, showcasing local youth from various backgrounds in prominent locations like Jewel Changi Airport, S.E.A. Aquarium at Resorts World Sentosa, and historic sites such as Fort Canning Park. It also captures the essence of everyday life in heartland areas, including an HDB estate in MacPherson and Mountain Coffee in Geylang. The youth gather at the floating stage to dance and sing along to Coldplay’s performance, reflecting the city's dynamic spirit.
Shot during Coldplay's Music of the Spheres World Tour in January 2024, the video coincided with the band's six sold-out performances at the National Stadium. In a statement, the band expressed their admiration for Singapore: “While we were in Singapore, we shot the video and captured some of the amazing, young, vibrant people whom we had met. We are interested in shooting things in places we have never filmed before and mixing people up as much as possible. It was really fun to have a kind of dance party out in the middle of the water, just us and the otters.”
The multicultural aspect of the music video embodies the theme of "Man In The Moon," which focuses on unity and shared experiences transcending individual differences. The track is part of "Moon Music (Full Moon Edition)," a bonus edition of their 10th studio album "Moon Music" (2024).
Local personalities also feature in the video, including visual artist Sam Lo, known as Sticker Lady, who is shown spray-painting a mural at People’s Park Complex in Chinatown. Directed by Los Angeles-based director Ben Mor, the video is part of a series of Singapore Tourism Board (STB) projects with global pop acts.
The music video is the most recent in a series of Singapore Tourism Board (STB) collaborations with global pop artists, including American singers Billie Eilish and Charlie Puth, American band OneRepublic, and Hong Kong-born star Jackson Wang, who have all showcased Singapore’s sights and sounds.
