What are NFTs?

A non-fungible token (NFT) can be likened to an original piece of physical artwork, only that it’s digital. Instead of getting a painting that can be hung up on the wall, the buyer gets a digital file instead.

Non-fungible means that it cannot be replaced by another identical item. While you may be able save NFT’s image on your computer, you’re still not holding onto the original copy because it doesn’t contain a unique set of data stored in the original NFT.

For example, think about how you can print out a copy of the Mona Lisa, but of course, it won’t be able to be passed off as the real deal.

Norwegian Cruise Line is breaking into the metaverse with the launch of the cruise industry’s first NFT collection.

Six NFT art pieces created by Manuel Di Rita, a.k.a. “Peeta”, the Italian artist who designed the hull art on the Norwegian Prima and the Norwegian Viva, will be put up for auction on 13 April, 9pm SGT.

Bidding for the first NFT, designed in the likeness of Norwegian Prima’s hull art, will start at US$2,500. Not only will the winner of the first auction get to own a virtual piece of the Norwegian Prima, he/she will also get to enjoy a complimentary stay onboard Norwegian Prima’s balcony stateroom on one of its inaugural US voyages from Miami, Florida.

The remaining five NFTs will be auctioned off at prices beginning at US$250. These pieces feature elements of the 3D designs often depicted in Peeta’s works which will be on display onboard Norwegian Prima.

All proceeds from the auction are stated to be donated to Teach for America, which supports a network of leaders looking to expand opportunities for children in classrooms, schools and the overall education system in the US.

“We are so excited to partner with Peeta on this first for our brand and for the industry,” said NCL President and CEO Harry Sommer. “Peeta is a talented artist who has brought the magic and beauty of the ocean to our ships, so we are happy to share this with our guests and to donate the proceeds of this new venture to Teach For America, an organisation and a cause very near and dear to our hearts.”
