Singaporeans are more inclined to skip travel to the  United States than others in South-east Asia, according to research commissioned by CNN Travel.

The survey showed 7% of Singaporeans said their interest in visiting the US increased this year, while more than half (55%) said their interest had decreased.

Singaporeans, the survey found, are more concerned about travelling to the US than others in the region, in relation to:

  • their personal safety in the US

  • possible discrimination or poor treatment while there

  • actions by the Trump administration

  • gun violence

  • border detentions

The Singapore numbers contrasted from the 44% of South-east Asian respondents who said their interest in the US increased this year, and the 18% who said it fell.

The survey showed that Singaporeans' views of the US differed from those from Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines and Malaysia, “often by a wide margin”, CNN Travel reported.

Singaporeans were the only respondents in the survey to say that they still get most of their information from local and international news.

Respondents from the other five countries, including 80% of those from Thailand, said social media is their primary news source.

The survey showed that Singaporeans are less worried than other respondents about only  two issues: travel costs and visa requirements.
