Traveloka, in partnership with YouGov, has released a new study titled "Travel Redefined: Understanding and Catering to the Diverse Needs of APAC Travelers", surveying nearly 12,000 respondents across nine Asia-Pacific (APAC) countries.

The research finds that domestic travel dominates the region, driven by affordability, convenience, and safety. For instance, 70% of respondents in Thailand, Indonesia, and Japan prefer domestic holidays. In Japan specifically, 65% cited safety as their main reason for staying local.

Travel motivations vary by market. In Singapore, 38% seek rest through urban escapes, while 47% of Indonesian respondents opt for adventure and nature. In Japan, 40% lean towards wellness and culture-based travel, including spa retreats and historical sites.

Affordability also plays a key role across several markets. Price is the top consideration when choosing accommodation for travellers in Singapore (45%), Australia (48%), Malaysia (46%), Japan (43%) and Indonesia (46%).

Digital platforms are gaining significant traction. In Indonesia and Singapore, 53% of travellers use online platforms for leisure trip planning. Additionally, 83% of users express moderate to high trust in the reliability and security of these platforms.

Interest in sustainable travel is rising, particularly in India, Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia. Yet, 32% say sustainable options are too expensive, while another 32% don’t know where to find them.
