Iron butt travel gets its name from the endurance required to withstand long, uncomfortable journeys on public transportation or budget options.

Travellers employing this strategy often utilise loyalty programmes, points exchanges, and little-known perks offered by travel websites to further reduce costs.

One notable example of this trend is a 25-year-old Chinese woman known as Xinxin, who visited 42 cities across four countries in a year, spending just US$2,900. Her travels included destinations in China, Russia, Thailand, and Indonesia. Xinxin's approach involved thorough research to find the lowest fares and economical accommodation options.

Another case involves a man in his early 20s who toured Laos, Thailand, and Malaysia over 20 days, spending only US$585 and relying solely on trains and buses for transportation.

Fans of iron butt travel argue that this approach not only saves money but also enhances the travel experience by fostering connections with locals and fellow travellers. However, critics caution that such intensive, low-budget travel may lead to burnout and potentially compromise safety.

As this trend continues to grow, travel agents may need to adapt their strategies to cater to this emerging market of cost-conscious, adventure-seeking clients.

While iron butt travel is largely a FIT (free independent traveller) phenomenon, there’s an opportunity for travel agents to tap into this trend by highlighting how younger travellers can save even more by booking through an agent. Agents can offer expert insights on the best loyalty programmes, uncover hidden deals, and bundle affordable yet value-packed itineraries that cater to the adventurous spirit.

By showcasing the potential savings on transportation, accommodations, and experiences, travel advisors can position themselves as key resources for young, budget-savvy travellers looking to stretch their dollars. Additionally, they can suggest alternative routes, off-peak travel times, or lesser-known destinations that still deliver unique experiences, helping clients achieve their wanderlust without the risk of burnout.
