IHG Hotels & Resorts has launched a hotel room of the future, using voice-controlled AI-driven software to control light, shades, music, TV and even concierge responses.

Partnering with software developer, this voice-controlled home automation promises privacy, data security, and natural interactions, with the first such smart rooms rolled out at the Kimpton Rowan hotel in Palm Springs, California, USA.

For instance, a purpose-built natural language processing understands multiple requests in one command, searches for specific music and video content, and includes built-in hotel concierge responses throughout the hotel stay.

Through the Josh app, hotel guests can also control everything from circadian lighting settings, air quality sensors, room shades, to surround sound music.

What seems like an art piece transforms into a 4K QLED display TV screen again via voice control, supported by Roku which offers access to streaming media content from services such as Netflix and Hulu.

With travellers increasingly connected post-pandemic, and actively seeking digital services and experiences that are automated and touchless, IHG's new launch seeks to explore "how AI [and next-generation technology] can be more widely adopted by our properties around the world to give guests epic experiences as they return to our hotels,” said Brian McGuinness, SVP, Global Guest Experience Shared Services.
