The upcoming MATTA Fair, scheduled for 6-8 September 2024, will spotlight Sabah and Sarawak as the twin jewels of Malaysia’s domestic tourism.

Promoting the two states as ‘One Borneo’ is a strategic move aimed at capturing the attention of both domestic and international travellers seeking unique, immersive experiences.

At a recent press conference, the campaign was unveiled, showcasing the rich biodiversity, cultural heritage, and adventure tourism opportunities that Sabah and Sarawak offer. By positioning the two states as a unified destination, the campaign aims to encourage longer stays and deeper exploration. This integrated approach is expected to benefit the tourism industry and foster stronger ties between Sabah and Sarawak.

Sharzede Datu Haji Salleh Askor, CEO of the Sarawak Tourism Board, said, “Sarawak and Sabah have long shared the Bornean identity, but we are also very distinct and this is what we’d like travellers to know.

“Yes, we both have orangutans and the Rafflesia, but Sabah is rich with beaches and islands, while Sarawak is where visitors can discover eco-tourism and adventure.”

Askor also added that the ‘One Borneo’ strategy is designed to highlight the unique offerings of both states rather than pit them against each other.

“Visitors will also find that the culinary offerings are distinct between the two states,” said Tay Shu Lan, deputy CEO, Sabah Tourism Board. “Sabah is known for its Tenom coffee and Sabah tea, which celebrates the region’s landscape. On the other hand, Sarawak stands out for its unique Sarawak laksa with layers of spices which you cannot find anywhere else.”

Industry experts believe this strategic focus on Sabah and Sarawak will revitalise domestic tourism and significantly contribute to Malaysia’s economic recovery.

MATTA Fair, Malaysia’s largest travel fair, has always been a key platform for promoting tourism, and this year’s emphasis on Sabah and Sarawak is expected to draw significant attention. Special travel packages, exclusive deals, and unique itineraries will entice travellers to experience the best these states have to offer.
