Hoshino Resorts has launched KAI Okuhida, a new hot spring ryokan located in the heart of Gifu's Okuhida-Onsengo area, which opened on 5 September 2024. This is the first KAI ryokan in Gifu and offers a serene escape in one of Japan's largest geothermal regions, famous for its mineral-rich onsen (hot springs).
Okuhida, located in the Northern Alps at an elevation of 1,200 metres, provides stunning mountain views and distinct seasonal changes. Winter, in particular, is an ideal time to visit, as the snow-capped peaks and thermal waters offer a unique contrast for travellers looking to relax in natural surroundings.
"Our aim is to offer guests a harmonious blend of nature, craftsmanship, and relaxation," says Hoshino Resorts.
The ryokan’s design reflects the region’s craftsmanship, with 28 of its 49 rooms featuring private open-air onsen baths, allowing guests to enjoy the area's hot springs while taking in the winter landscape.
KAI Okuhida is positioned near several hiking trails and scenic spots, including Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO World Heritage site, just an hour away by car.
According to Hoshino Resorts, the ryokan is designed to resemble a traditional hot spring village, with bathhouses and common areas connected by walkways, and it showcases the culture of the Hida region, known for its woodworking and lacquerware.
The ryokan offers a kaiseki menu featuring local specialties like Hida beef, prepared in a unique "tsuto" wrapper of straw, allowing guests to grill it themselves. Prices start at 31,000 JPY (US$208) per night and includes breakfast and dinner.
