The Hanoi Train officially started operations on 6 September, offering travellers a new way to experience the capital while connecting to Tu Son in Bac Ninh province.
Developed by the Vietnam Railway Corporation (VNR) in collaboration with the tourism sector, the service follows trial runs that began on 19 August. Operated by BHL Tourism Service Trading Joint Stock Company, the train is inspired by the ancient Thang Long Citadel. Each carriage bears the name of one of Hanoi’s historic gates – Cau Den, Quan Chuong, Cau Giay, Cho Dua and Dong Mac.
The train consists of five double-decker seating carriages, each holding 40 to 60 seats, and two carriages reserved for check-in.
Two trains depart daily from Hanoi Station at 8am and 1.30pm, travelling via Gia Lam and Yen Vien to Tu Son Station. Return services from Tu Son depart at 10.30am and 4.20pm. The journey takes around 40 minutes.
Onboard, passengers are entertained with traditional performances including quan ho (love duet folk singing), ca tru (ceremonial singing), cheo (opera) and xam (buskers’ singing). Travellers can also try their hand at making Dong Ho folk paintings and Phu The cakes, alongside sampling Hanoi delicacies such as young sticky rice and jasmine-scented lotus tea.
At Tu Son, visitors can tour Do Temple, a significant relic site dedicated to eight kings of the Ly dynasty, before returning to Hanoi.
Tickets, priced between 550,000 and 750,000 dong (US$21–28), are available at VNR counters at Hanoi Station and through travel agents. Discounts apply for children and groups.
