The global rail booking landscape could be getting a major shake-up, with Omio Group announcing plans to acquire Rail Europe.
If the deal goes through, Rail Europe will join Omio's portfolio alongside its B2C platform, B2B distribution business and travel discovery brand, Rome2Rio.
The combined business would sell more than 22 million train tickets a year and work with over 28,000 transport operators, travel sellers and partners across more than 70 countries.
The deal also gives Omio access to Rail Europe's long-standing network of travel agents and operators, along with its 90 years of rail expertise.
For travel advisors, the acquisition brings together two well-known names in rail distribution under one group, although Rail Europe will continue to operate independently, while using Omio Group's technology and wider transport inventory.
"This deal marks a transformative moment for the future of global ground transport,” said Jean-Francois Bessiron, chief B2B officer at Omio Group. “Omio and Rail Europe would give the industry a player with the technology and scale to make connected, accessible, and affordable train travel a reality for all. The sector has been constrained by outdated systems and controlled by dominant players for far too long."
Björn Bender, CEO and executive chairman of Rail Europe, said the acquisition would allow Rail Europe to scale its offerings.
"For the next chapter, Omio and Rail Europe are a natural fit. Omio brings significant scale and transformative technology. Rail Europe adds considerable rail experience, a trusted international consumer brand, and the strongest B2B distribution network. Together, we would offer more to our travellers, partners and the rail industry than either company could achieve on its own."
The acquisition is still subject to consultation with Rail Europe's Comité Social et Économique (CSE) before it can be completed.
