A new travel initiative launched by the European Union aims to enable thousands of 18-year-old European citizens to travel within the continent for free this (northern) summer as part of plans to promote the EU’s diverse cultural heritage.
Under the DiscoverEU initiative, 15,000 young people will be able to receive free train, bus, ferry and in some cases plane tickets to travel within the 28-nation bloc.
The European Commission has forked out €12 million (US$14.4 million) to fund at least 15,000 DiscoverEU passes for this year alone.
Participants will get the opportunity to travel up to 30 days and visit between one and four foreign destinations.
Interested participants will be required to submit their application during a two-week period this June via the European Youth Portal; a jury will then make the final selection of the first 15,000 recipients.
A second round of applications in the second half of 2018 may be organised based on the remaining budget and feedback from participants.
