Capella Hotel Group has appointed two executives to lead its expansion into Japan, with Capella Kyoto and Patina Osaka set to open in 2025.

John Blanco, previously general manager of Capella Bangkok, will take on the role of cluster general manager for both Capella Kyoto and Patina Osaka. Blanco, an American with Venezuelan roots, brings extensive experience in luxury hospitality, including roles at The Ritz-Carlton and Four Seasons.

Known for his success with Capella Bangkok, which garnered multiple awards within its first year, Blanco is recognised for his ability to create exceptional guest experiences. He will oversee the launch of Capella Kyoto, ensuring the property reflects the city's rich heritage through its design and cultural programmes.

Ellen Franke, formerly general manager at The Ritz-Carlton Langkawi, joins Capella Hotel Group as general manager of Patina Osaka.

With over 25 years of experience in luxury hospitality across Europe, the USA, China, and Malaysia, Franke will lead Patina Osaka, the first urban property for Patina Hotels & Resorts. Her role involves delivering modern luxury and exceptional service to align with the brand's pillars.

Capella Kyoto will be the first Capella Hotels & Resorts property in Japan. Located in the Miyagawa-chō district, a cultural hub known for its geisha and maiko, the hotel will feature 89 rooms designed by Kengo Kuma and Associates, with interiors by Brewin Design Office. The four-storey hotel aims to capture Kyoto’s cultural essence.

Patina Osaka will be the first urban property for Patina Hotels & Resorts. The 221-key hotel, located opposite Osaka Castle and next to Naniwanomiya-Ato Park, will be housed in a 21-storey building designed by Jun Mitsui & Associates and Strickland. This modern property will introduce Patina’s lifestyle brand to the Japanese market.
