Long before travel brands sold immersion and authenticity, David Attenborough was already transporting audiences deep into the world’s wildest and most remote landscapes.

Now 100, the legendary broadcaster and natural historian remains both storyteller and conscience for a planet whose greatest tourism treasures are increasingly among its most vulnerable.

Few voices have shaped the travel imagination quite like David Attenborough’s. Long before “experiential” and “immersive” travels became industry buzzwords, the quiet wonder of the “Voice of Nature” had already transported audiences deep into the rainforests of Borneo and the snowy mountains of Nepal.

Across generations of documentaries, Attenborough transformed nature storytelling into a global cultural phenomenon, inspiring audiences not only to explore the world, but to value and protect it.

Over the decades, Attenborough’s commentary evolved from celebration to warning, documenting coral bleaching, deforestation and biodiversity loss across some of the world’s most fragile ecosystems.

Marking his milestone birthday on 8 May, scientists also named a newly identified species of wasp in his honour, recognising Attenborough’s lifelong contribution to natural history and environmental awareness.

Celebrations of his centenary included a live tribute event at London’s Royal Albert Hall, broadcast on BBC One, featuring music from his landmark programmes alongside stories and reflections from conservationists, scientists and public figures inspired by his legacy.
