Jeju’s iconic lava tube cave, Manjanggul, has reopened on 30 May after an extensive safety overhaul, following a rockfall incident in December 2023.

The UNESCO-designated Jeju World Natural Heritage site had closed after a 70cm rock fell from a five-metre height above the entrance area, damaging stair railings and other faciltiies.

Following a slew of reinforcement work, visitors can now reenter the cave, which now has viewing decks installed along the entire exploration route, safer walking paths, an upgraded lighting system, and safety facilities added at high-risk sections.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Global Geopark, and Natural Monument, the cave attracts some 500,000 visitors annually.
