Phu Quoc International Airport is set for a major expansion following a strategic agreement between Sun Group and Changi Airports International (CAI) to develop Vietnam’s first integrated “airport destination”.

The agreement, signed on 23 March, will see Sun Group contribute its destination development expertise, while CAI provides advisory services across airport operations, commercial performance, air connectivity, capacity planning and service standards.

The partnership aims to transform Phu Quoc International Airport into a travel destination, delivering world-class service standards and a seamless travel experience ahead of the APEC 2027 Summit, when the airport is expected to welcome global leaders and international visitors.

The move is also set to strengthen the island’s standing as an emerging aviation and tourism hub in Asia Pacific.

“Airports today play a far greater role than transportation infrastructure. They are gateways that shape the first impression of a destination,” said Dang Minh Truong, chairman of Sun Group.

A government-approved master plan includes a new runway and second terminal, projecting the airport to handle up to capacity of 24 million passengers per year, scalable to 50 million in the long term. The airport handled six million passengers in 2025.

“Sun Group’s integrated tourism and entertainment eco-system provides a strong foundation for the long-term development of Phu Quoc International Airport as a key gateway for the island,” said Eugene Gan, CEO of CAI.
