As aircraft manufacturers roll out new ultra long-range aircraft, and
airlines stretch their non-stop routes across the globe, a new term has
entered the travel lexicon: raw-dogging.
But the term has nothing to do with pooches.
Raw-dogging is the term given to doing anything without prior
preparation. In this case, it refers to spending an entire long-haul
flight without bringing anything to soften the blow. No inflight
entertainment. No films, books, travel pillows or music. And, in some
cases, no food or drink.
“Just raw-dogged it, 15-hour flight to Melbourne," said Australian
music producer Torren Foot on TikTok. "No music, no movies, just flight
map.”
Apparently, it’s a test of masculinity by men who want to prove their
resilience and self-control. And then boast about it on TikTok.
Health experts warn that more extreme versions of the trend can pose
serious risks of dehydration for those who refuse drinks, and deep vein
thrombosis for those who do not leave their seats.
According to online culture expert Josh Stuart, the trend is a subset
of modern masculinity performed on social media. "This is the ice bath
of the sky," Stuart told ABC Australia.
