Emirates is set to become the first Autism Certified Airline globally, with certification to be awarded by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) in the coming months. This milestone comes as the airline completes initial autism and sensory-awareness training for over 30,000 cabin crew and ground staff.

The comprehensive training programme aims to equip Emirates staff with the knowledge and skills to better support passengers with autism and sensory sensitivities. Training topics include understanding the autism spectrum, recognising potential triggers, and addressing individual needs. This builds on Emirates’ earlier "Introduction to Autism and Hidden Disabilities" course, completed by 23,000 staff in 2023.

In addition to training, Emirates will roll out new services in 2025 to enhance travel accessibility. Among these are sensory guides, which provide digital tools to help travellers with autism navigate sensory-rich environments at Dubai International Airport and onboard flights. These guides were developed following an audit of facilities conducted by IBCCES, measuring sensory inputs such as noise, lighting, and other stimuli. The airline also plans to introduce neurodiverse-friendly sensory aids, such as fidget toys, to help passengers reduce stress and stay focused during flights.

This initiative aligns with Dubai’s broader goals of becoming a Certified Autism Destination and the world’s most accessible travel hub. Collaborations with Dubai Airports, the Department of Economy and Tourism, and other entities aim to drive forward inclusive travel options in the region.

Emirates’ efforts follow its achievement in April 2024 of the Certified Autism Center designation for its Dubai check-in facilities, a step that complements Dubai International Airport’s own autism certification received in December 2023.
