For the longest time, the absence of a direct flight between India and the Philippines has often been cited as a barrier to business expansion and tourism opportunities between the two countries.
That could soon change. The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) is in talks with Air India to establish direct flights between the Philippines and India, responding to sustained demand for international air travel.
In a statement released on 19 February, CAAP confirmed that discussions with Air India executives focused on launching these direct air services. The meeting included discussions on required documentation, technical specifications, and the procedural framework needed for flight approvals. Representatives also addressed proposed routes and flight frequencies.
CAAP Director General Manuel Antonio Tamayo shared about the commitment to “facilitating the flight approval process while maintaining rigorous safety and operational standards.” He also spoke about shared optimism between CAAP and Air India regarding the economic and cultural benefits of direct air links, with both parties foreseeing increased passenger demand and expanded business opportunities between the two countries.
The potential for direct flights has been further supported by growing tourism between the Philippines and India. In 2024, the number of Indian tourists visiting the Philippines increased by 12%, reaching approximately 79,000. The Philippine government has also simplified visa processes for Indian travellers, launching an e-Visa system that allows for remote applications.
Additionally, other carriers, such as IndiGo, are also being considered to serve this potentially lucrative route.
