A budget of about two billion baht (US$ 61.6 million) was approved by cabinet last October for the construction of the second terminal and expansion of the existing terminal and car park building.

Construction of the new passenger terminal for Thailand’s Khon Kaen International Airport is underway, with the terminal expected to complete in three years, said Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith at a ceremony on Sunday (September 23).

A budget of about two billion baht (US$ 61.6 million) was approved by cabinet last October for the construction of the second terminal and expansion of the existing terminal and car park building.

The expansion of the existing terminal from 16,500 square metre to 44,500 square metre will be able to accommodate about five million passengers annually.

The airport currently serves regional flights, with 18 arrival and 18 departure flights daily. In the near future, he said, the airport will also provide service to several cities in China.

Termpittayapaisith said the new passenger terminal will open in late 2021, complementing transportation links to be provided by the Nakhon Ratchasima-Nong Khai high-speed rail route now under construction.
