AirAsia X Berhad has signed a US$19 billion agreement for 150 Airbus A220 aircraft, with options for another 150 aircraft, becoming the global launch customer for the new high-density 160-seat configuration.

The aircraft will become the group’s next-generation “efficiency workhorse”, providing the right-sized capacity needed to improve margins on mid-density routes while supporting AirAsia’s broader network expansion strategy.

According to the airline, the highly scalable A220 platform also offers a seamless pathway to the future A220-500 variant, which is expected to replace ageing A320s in the 180-seat category as part of a long-term transition towards a high-utilisation narrowbody fleet.

The A220-300s will allow the group to “expand connectivity into high-growth thin markets and increase flight frequencies on established trunk routes” to offer passengers greater schedule flexibility.

AirAsia X Berhad group CEO Bo Lingam said the aircraft’s range of up to seven hours “opens up entirely new possibilities”, while Tony Fernandes, CEO of AirAsia Group, described the A220 as “the perfect tool for our next phase of growth”.

The aircraft is expected to deliver approximately 20% better fuel efficiency and around 20% lower emissions compared with the A320ceo.

The first A220-300 is scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2028 and will initially be deployed on regional routes across Asean and Asia Pacific.

Once in service, the aircraft will free up larger A320s and A321s for higher-demand mid-haul operations, while enabling A330s to focus on longer-haul routes to destinations in Europe, Australia and North America.
