Lake Maggiore is not as popular with American travelers as Lake Como, but there is a lot of glamor (and less inflated rates) to be had here.

Less than an hour from Milan Malpensa airport, the curving pathway to this small boutique hotel's entrance is across from the lakefront promenade. This Swiss-built villa opened its doors as a member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts with some notably modern interiors.
