Visiting Venice could soon become more expensive, as the Italian city considers raising its tourist entry fee in a bid to further tackle overtourism.
Venice became the world's first city to introduce an entry charge for day-trippers in 2024. Under the current system, visitors who book in advance pay a lower fee, while several groups, including children under 14, are exempt.
Two years in, city authorities are considering increasing the charge beyond the current €5 to €10 range, arguing that the fee is too low to effectively manage visitor volumes, according to Reuters.
Officials are also exploring the possibility of raising the daily charge to as much as €30 (US$34), although any new pricing structure for 2027 would require approval from the Italian government.
The scheme is designed to encourage travellers to avoid visiting during the busiest periods of the year, including major public holidays such as May Day.
