The 2017 Visit Years in the three Malaysian states of Pahang, Perak and Terengganu are expected to attract 31.8 million visitors to Malaysia, a 4.3 per cent increase over 2016.
Tourism and Culture Deputy Minister, Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin said the three states were attractive destinations, each with its own uniqueness.
Increased tourist arrivals to these states would not just benefit them and the local economy, but also the national economy, she added.
According to the deputy minister, tourism expenditure this year for the country was expected to total RM118 billion (US$26.3 billion).
In a related development, Terengganu said its ‘Visit Beautiful Terengganu (VBT) 2017’ programme is expected to draw 5.6 million visitors to the state, generating an estimated RM5 billion (US$1.1 billion) in tourism revenue.
The state has lined up a year-round programme for VBT 2017 to meet its set target. Highlights include:
• January: Peranakan Mek (princess) and Mok (prince) beauty contest in Kampung Cina
• February: Homestay food and cultural festival in villages
• March: Setiu Wetlands Festival
• April: Squid jigging and angling carnivals
• May: International paragliding championship
• June: Annual Mek kebaya beauty pageant
• July: SEA Games equestrian endurance competition
• August: World Gamelan Festival
• September: Lingai Mountain Bike Challenge
• October: Terengganu International Eco and Marine Tourism conference
• November: Sounds of Terengganu musical festival
• December: Batangan endurance cycling jamboree
