Spending in Thailand by Chinese tourists during the Chinese New Year holiday was the highest among South-east Asian countries, and second worldwide behind Hong Kong. Average spending was 1,646 yuan (US$245).

The figures were recorded for transactions recorded between February 4 and 10 in the 54 markets where Alipay is accepted.

The high spending was attributed to convenience stores and duty-free shops accepting Alipay and offering special promotions for Alipay users.

Thailand’s King Power recorded a 50% increase in transactions thanks to discounts for Alipay users, while transactions at convenience stores also rose by 38% due to their “Alipay corner”, The Nation reported.
