As if Paris isn't expensive enough as it is, it is set to become even more expensive for tourists in 2024.
The city of love recently implemented a significant increase in
tourism taxes starting 1 January 2024, impacting various accommodations.
Brace yourselves for a surge of nearly 200% in nightly taxes, making
that dreamy Parisian getaway a pricier affair.
Luxury seekers opting for "palaces" will be hit the hardest, with a
nightly tax of €14.95 (US$16.41), representing a 199% surge from the
2023 rate.
Even those indulging in 5-star accommodations will witness a
substantial increase, facing a nightly rate of €10.73 (US$11.77), a
considerable 186% climb from the previous €3.75 (US$4.11).
Travellers opting for 4-star hotels will also feel the pinch with a
new rate of €8.13 (US$8.92), marking a significant 182% rise from the
2023 rate of €2.88 (US$3.16).
On a more modest scale, patrons of 1-star hotels, holiday retreats,
guest lodgings, or hostels will encounter a less dramatic uptick, facing
a new rate of €2.60 (US$2.85) compared to the 2023 rate of €1
(US$1.10).
This tax surge comes ahead of the much-anticipated Paris Olympics,
scheduled to kick off on 26 July 2024, contributing to the escalating
hotel prices in preparation for the grand event.
Paris is not alone in this fiscal shift, as Amsterdam has also
greenlit a tourist tax increment of 12.5% for the current year,
affecting both overnight stays and cruise ship visits.
Globally, destinations like Iceland and Venice are following suit,
introducing new levies to bolster environmental and sustainability
initiatives.
