Japan's Noto Peninsula is undergoing a Pokémon (Pocket Monsters) makeover, as the town in Ishikawa Prefecture continues to rebuild to aid tourism recovery, following a massive earthquake in January 2024.
Starting 7 July, visitors will arrive at the renamed Noto Satoyama Pokémon With You Airport – a special season running until September 2029.
Within the terminal are all 111 flying-type Pokémon creatures on display, themed wayfinding signs, a large Pikachu and airplane balloon in the second-floor atrium, and an observation deck renamed Pikachu’s Satoyama.
Beyond photo opportunities, fans can also view original short videos on their smartphones while exploring the newly decorated airport. The airport’s Restaurant Annon will also serve up themed meals, while airport shops offer limited-edition souvenirs.
The Pokémon adventure doesn’t stop here.
In mid-July, two Hokuriku Railroad Group buses will be decked in Pokémon decals for travels in the region.
The first is the existing limited express route linking Kanazawa Station, Noto Satoyama Airport, and Wajima; while the second is a new excursion bus connecting the airport with Pokémon tourism spots around the peninsula.
A highlight amongst the above tourism spots is the new Wakura Pokémon Footbath. Located at Yuttari Park, the natural hot spring water facility is free to the public, who can enjoy a relaxing soak while gazing out to sea – and plenty of Pokémon buddies dotted about the footbath.
For advisors planning itineraries, travel agency, Beyond Kanazawa shared in a post that post-earthquake Noto has restored many of the region’s damaged landmarks, including temples and attractions. Infrastructure such as road, bridges, and other essential facilities have also been rebuilt or enhanced.
Additionally, traditional ryokans and hotels alike have reopened with upgraded facilities, while festivities such as the Kiriko Lantern Festivals have also returned.
