Villagers in the small Spanish village of Hio, Galicia have found a novel way of blocking tourists from their local beach.

They have been walking backwards and forwards continuously across three pedestrian crossings in the village, stopping cars and motor homes from passing through to the beach.

About 80 pedestrians repeatedly crossed the road on Sunday afternoon, causing long tailbacks, the UK Daily Telegraph reported.

Villagers are unhappy about the traffic congestion caused by an influx of beachgoers in the summer months.

“This is not tourist phobia – it’s about locals’ right to live in peace,” said the head of the village residents’ association.
