HUA HIN - The seaside resort of Hua Hin on the Gulf of Thailand is set to become an international and domestic tourism hub.

In response to local demands for improved air accessibility, Thailand’s transport ministry has approved a new airport terminal, runway extension and other facilities that would allow the airport to treble the number of passengers it can handle to 900 an hour.

Deputy Transport Minister Athirat Rattanaset  said the Department of Airports  is working on plans to upgrade Hua Hin airport, starting  next year with expected completion in 2022.

Thaivisa noted that the moves are likely to be part of measures to develop the whole area from Hua Hin south to Chumphon as the "Thai Riviera" - an alternative to more established tourist areas like Phuket in the south and Pattaya on the Eastern Seaboard.
