Lan Kwai Fong, Hong Kong’s iconic nightlife district is getting a makeover, with the first phase expected to kick off in May.
Works will cover 30,000sqm across the nightlife hotspot and its surrounding streets in Central, including popular tourist stops such as the Central-Mid-Levels Escalator to Wyndham Street.
Phase one covers five segments. Pedestrian and vehicle paths will be repaved and public refuse collection points upgraded. Murals will go up along Wing Wah Lane, while D’Aguilar Street will be the new spot for light and shadow art projection evenings.
Phase two will involve the community at large, seeking local stakeholders' views on future design plans for the area.
The Lan Kwai Fong Association noted that the improvements are expected to bring in more visitors, while boosting retail and F&B businesses in Central, said director Anthea Cheung So-mui to local news outlets.
She added the association has plans to invite renowned artists to create work including murals, and in doing so turn the district into a picture-worthy stop for tourists.
