A mass shooting at a Jewish holiday celebration on Australia’s iconic Bondi Beach has sent shockwaves across the country and around the world.

The iconic beachside neighbourhood in Sydney’s east was hosting a Chanukah by the Sea event, celebrating the start of the eight-day Hanukkah festival. Two gunmen, a father and son duo, have been identified. Police killed the 50-year-old on scene, while the 24-year-old son remains in critical condition in hospital.

It was the deadliest shooting in almost 30 years, in a country with strict gun control laws. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has declared plans for tougher gun laws during Monday’s national cabinet, and a review of existing licenses.

As of 15 December, 15 people were killed and 40 injured. France and Israel have each confirmed the death of one citizen but gave no further details at press time.

What does this mean for travellers?

Australian authorities have stressed that there is no ongoing or broader threat to tourists or the general public. The country continues to be widely regarded as a safe destination, with low levels of violent crime and strong policing.

Bondi Beach has since reopened following the conclusion of police operations, and Sydney’s transport network, hotels and visitor attractions continue to operate as normal.

A memorial site has been established at the rear of Bondi Pavilion for those who wish to lay flowers.
