Johor’s chief minister Menteri Besar Osman Sapian said on Monday (November 12) that construction of the bridge could start after all quarters agree on how to address congestion at the existing Johor Causeway and the Malaysia-Singapore Second Link, Straits Times reported.

Several mega projects have been identified for development in the southern Malaysian state of Johor, including a new bridge that will link Johor Bahru and Singapore and an airport in Mersing.

Johor’s chief minister Menteri Besar Osman Sapian said on Monday (November 12) that construction of the bridge could start after all quarters agree on how to address congestion at the existing Johor Causeway and the Malaysia-Singapore Second Link, Straits Times reported.

The plan could involve reviving plans to build the bridge “crooked” with an S-shaped, six-lane highway to allow vessels to pass underneath.

The minister indicated that construction might take place next year, and that the bridge’s design was not finalised.

The proposed new Mersing airport, located in the East Coast Economic Region (ECER), will serve tourists from locations such as Batam, Indonesia, and Phuket, Thailand. It will also act as a light aircraft repair hub.

The airport will be handling light planes like the Fokker rather than aircrafts like Boeing, said the minister.

Two possible locations for the airport have been identified, but the cost is still unknown. Construction of the airport, if to begin next year, will depend on the federal government’s allocation.
