Bali's newly elected Governor, Wayan Koster, has announced plans to implement stricter controls on tourism development on the “Island of the Gods”. This follows months of debate and protests over the island's growing environmental and social pressures, which culminated in calls for a complete moratorium on tourism development.

Governor Koster has stated that a complete ban is not the solution and that a more nuanced approach is needed to ensure sustainable tourism growth. His plans are likely to include:

  • Capacity limits: Introducing stricter quotas on visitor numbers to popular tourist destinations to prevent overcrowding and environmental damage.

  • Focus on quality over quantity: Encouraging the development of high-end, luxury tourism experiences that generate higher revenue and minimise environmental impact.

  • Promoting cultural sensitivity: Implementing measures to protect Balinese culture and traditions from the negative impacts of mass tourism.

  • Investing in infrastructure: Upgrading existing infrastructure, such as roads and waste management facilities, to cope with the demands of tourism.

These measures are expected to be welcomed by many in the travel industry who believe that a complete ban would have been detrimental to the Balinese economy. However, environmental groups and some local communities may still express concerns about the potential impact of these measures.

Governor Koster has pledged to work closely with the tourism industry and local communities to develop and implement these new policies.
